Most women starting to take the pill report no side effects and those that do have only minor effects.  The most common minor side effects are:

  • Slight weight gain or loss
  • Nausea, Vomiting
  • Headaches, Dizziness
  • Depression
  • Change in breast size
  • Increase or decrease in acne
  • Vaginal infections
  • High blood pressure
  • Change in sex drive

Most of these side effects improve after 3 months on the Pill, if they don't your health care provider may prescribe a different oral contraceptive that may work better for you with less side effects.

There are also less common but serious side effects of using birth control pills, such as:

  • Blood clots in legs, lungs, heart or brain
  • Liver tumors (rare)
  • Heart attacks
  • Gallstones(rare)
